Gion and Japanese Swords

The Story of Swords in Kyoto

While Yasaka Shrine in Gion is known as a shrine to ward off bad luck and bring good luck, swords have long been dedicated to the shrine.
Swords are not only tools for fighting, but also “sacred treasures” dedicated to the gods.

A master swordsmith associated with this area Sanjo Munechika, was a swordsmith from the Heian period (794-1192).
He was a symbolic figure of the Yamashiro-den school, one of Kyoto's representative swordsmith schools, and left behind a graceful and elegant style.
The famous Kogumaru sword, which is said to have been forged with the aid of a magical fox from the sacred area of Inari, illistrates how these swords were not only weapons, but were seen as both sacred and mysterious.

Munechika, another very famous sword, has its likeness engraved on the Naginohoko sword float that is paraded during the yearly Gion festival in Kyoto. This allows the spirit of the sword to live on and be seen as it is paraded through the Gion area. In addition, both Munechika and Toshiro Yoshimitsu are enshrined in Awata Shrine, considered to be the eastern gateway to Kyoto. Their names are thus protected and their spirits allowed to remain within the shrine through the prayers of the many visitors to the shrine.

Yamashiro-den swords, characterized by their slender, elegant appearance and straight blade, are a true reflection of Kyoto aesthetic. Being able to hold one of these works of art in your own hands will allow you to feel the prayers used for forging these swords, the legend’s surrounding them, and this aesthetic native to Kyoto; truly deepening the richness of your experience.
